Shirley Moncrief

September 30, 1935 — March 28, 2021

Shirley Jean Moncrief - Went home to Jesus on Sunday, March 28, 2021 at the age 85. Shirley was born to John Frank Lee and Edna Baldwin Lee on September 30, 1935 in Birmingham, Alabama.  Although Shirley suffered with a hearing disability from birth and underwent several surgeries she never allowed this to slow her down.  She was married to James (Hank) Moncrief on Aug. 29, 1953 and was happily married until he passed away on  May 28, 1978. They shared 25 years together.  She lovingly cared for him when he became paralyzed.  They never had any children of their own, but she spent several years helping a single mom raise and care for her two children Eric and Regina loving them as if they were her own. Shirley is survived by her sister Sara Lloyd, many nieces and nephews, family and friends who love her dearly.  She is preceded in death by her husband, James (Hank) Moncrief,  Her parents John and Edna Lee,  Her brother Donald Lee, her sister Deborah Kiley and her nephew Timothy McDermott.  Shirley will always be remembered for her bubbly, energetic personality.  She was like a grandmother to all of the children and grandchildren of her siblings.  She loved each and everyone of her babies! Shirley loved reading, she was able to speed read books like no other.  Her favorite books to read were crime mysteries and End Time Prophecy books.  She took every opportunity to let us know the signs of the times making sure each of us were ready to go when Jesus comes!  Shirley also enjoyed fishing with her parents and going to the beach and got super excited about a good juicy Steak! Exactly 8 years ago to Shirley's death, she had a blood clot that caused her to loose her left leg.  We remember how strong she was through the trials of loosing her sister and her leg all at the same time.  Her recovery went so well because of her strong positive attitude and faith in God.    She never slowed down!  She lived independently in her apartment in Birmingham and did all of her own Cleaning, laundry etc.  She was so proud to be able to live on her own.  It wasn't until recently that Shirley was unable to care for herself after a gallbladder surgery.  She wasn't strong enough to remain in her apartment and was then located at McGuffey Health and Rehab Center in Gadsden, Al.  where she spent her last days.   Shirley has been an inspiration and joy to all who knew her.  She will be greatly missed.  The family will receive friends Saturday, April 10, 2021 beginning at 11:00 AM followed with a Chapel service at 12:00 noon at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville, Alabama.
