Margie was born to Oral and Exer Vaughan on October 22, 1922. She graduated from Hanceville High School in 1940 and went on to study education at Troy State University. Afterwards, she taught school for a time. She married Lester Smith and they resided in Birmingham with their two daughters for many years. She started a custom drapery business which she owned and operated until her retirement in the early 1980s. She and Lester retired together to Pell City where she has resided since. Margie was a member of Eden Westside Baptist Church in Pell City for over thirty years, where she taught Sunday School and also served as Training Union Director. She loved to read, do crossword puzzles, crochet, and play the organ.
