Kay Wood

February 21, 1931 — May 2, 2022

The family of Kay Frances Smith Wood sadly announces her passing on Monday, May 2, 2022 at the age of 91. She was the daughter of Dr. Thomas Luther Smith and Nettie Knight Smith of Birmingham, AL, born on February 21, 1931.

Kay lived most of her life in the Woodlawn community but resided in Trussville, AL in later years. Kay had many natural talents. Working in Bethel’s Flower Shop as a teenager she learned to create the prettiest bows and flower arrangements. She was a self-taught seamstress, sewing dresses and other things for her children and grandchildren. Kay was a very good cook who made the most out of whatever little the pantry supplied. She loved to sing and had a beautiful voice.

Kay was genuine. She was humble, kind, and mindful of others. One could depend on her for sensible and sound advice, only if asked for. She was a true caregiver. Kay was a Christian and a member of Clearview Baptist Church. Kay went to work for the Social Security Admin in 1971 and retired from the Teleservice Center in 1996.

She is survived by her four children. Son, Alan Wood (Libby), of Trussville, AL; her twin daughters, Karen Yates (Rick), of Chelsea, AL and Sharen Jackson, of Trussville, AL and her youngest daughter, Kathy Oliver (Bill), of Birmingham, AL. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Eric Wood (Ashley), Beth Furr (Parrish), CDR Adam Yates (Jenni), Laney Dominick (Matt), Heather Payne (Ricky), Christy Martin, Will Oliver, and Brent Oliver. Thirteen great grandchildren, Lawson Wood, Amelia Wood, Cameron Furr, Brantly Furr, Max Yates, Kate Yates, Sawyer Dominick, Landon Dominick, Jackson Payne, Jordan Payne, Ricky Payne, MaKayla Mount, and Holston Martin. She also leaves behind her sisters-in-law, Louise Smith, and Shirley Woods; five nephews and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, Howard Jackson Wood and her brother, Dr. Thomas Luther Smith, Jr.

Services for Kay will be held on Thursday, May 5th at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville at 2:00 p.m. with visitation for family and friends held one hour prior to the service.
