Elizabeth Hicks

December 15, 1946 — January 8, 2022

Hicks, Elizabeth K., age 75 of Palmerdale , AL peacefully returned to the Lord on January 8, 2022.  She was born on December 15, 1946 in Birmingham, AL and attended Palmerdale Grammar School and Tarrant High School.  She was a member of Palmerdale Cross Baptist Church, formerly Palmerdale Baptist Church.  She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Thomas W. Hicks; Children, Karen Horton and Rodney Hicks; Grandchildren, Hunter Horton and Harlie St. John (Robert); great grandchild, Ella Horton and sisters, June Andrews and Earlene Johnson.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Elver (Red) and Earlene C. Gilliland; sister Sherry L. Nord; brother-in-law John E. Johnson (Sargie) and Brewster C. Andrews (Bruce). Her family was her heart.  As a wife, mother and granny, she provided laughter, strength, loyalty, honesty and most importantly unconditional love. Kay was one of the founding members of the Palmerdale Volunteer Fire District that was established in 1972.  In the beginning years of the fire district, she served the community as a volunteer dispatcher and fire truck driver.  As the department grew and gained the rights to charge fire dues in 1979, she became a volunteer billing clerk and managed all aspects of billing and collecting fire dues (without computer assistance) in addition to other clerical duties.  She later became a paid member of the district and retired after almost 30 years of employment.  The fire department was her second family and she loved everyone that walked through the doors. A special thank you to the Palmerdale Fire District and Chief Jason Howell for the assistance rendered during her illness and to all the family and friends who diligently prayed.  Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens in Trussville, AL, with a visitation held one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Palmerdale Fire District, P.O. Box 267, Palmerdale, AL 35123 or your preferred charity.
