Wanda Jean Hunter Bryant, age 81 of Trussville, passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. She was born April 10, 1944 to John and Vera Hunter in Centre, Alabama and had nine brothers and sisters. Shortly after marrying Melvin Hugh Bryant, Jr. in 1960, they moved to Birmingham and started a family. Jean devoted her life to raising three children and being a supportive wife to Hugh. After his death in 1996, she found much joy in working in the Clay-Chalkville Middle School cafeteria. She would later move on to work at Cardiovascular Associates before she retired.
Jean loved her family, friends, flowers and the Lord. She was quite the cook, so family gatherings always included a delicious meal. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and would find ways to show them they were special and loved. For much of her life, she had a special group of ladies who were her “card girls” that would get together weekly and play endless rounds of Rook. Their time together was always filled with laughter and the bond of a sisterhood. In her later years, she enjoyed gathering friends for movies and meals and was always helping friends who couldn’t drive by taking them on errands. Jean also had a passion for planting flowers, which is evident in the colorful plants surrounding her home. She was in her happy place when she was digging in the dirt. She made serving the Lord a priority throughout her life during her years at Westside Alliance Church, Brewster Road Alliance Church and Deerfoot Baptist Church. She was most recently joined in fellowship with Ridgecrest Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings and her husband. The reunion must have been sweet when she joined her loved ones in eternity.
Jean is survived by her children: Linda McAllister (Don), Mark Bryant and John Bryant (Amy). Her surviving grandchildren are Adam McAllister (Shea), Sarah Phillips (Matt), Caleb McAllister (Nancy), Hunter Bryant, Hannah Bryant, Evan Bryant, Emma Bryant and Ethan Bryant. She was blessed to be a great-grandmother to Ava McAllister, Nora McAllister, Sadie McAllister, Ross Phillips and Madilyn Phillips. She also leaves behind many nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville. The service will follow at Noon in the funeral home chapel with burial afterwards in Jefferson Memorial Gardens. Rev. Jamie Walley will officiate the funeral. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
