Steven Orville Meigs

Steven Orville Meigs, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and cherished friend, passed away on October 23, 2026, at the age of 88.

A lifelong Alabamian, Steve was born on September 12, 1938, in Birmingham. He attended Barrett Elementary and went on to graduate from Woodlawn High School before earning a scholarship to Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). A proud veteran, Steve served his country in the Alabama Air National Guard from 1960 to 1966.

Steve was anchored by the love of his life, Patricia Oden Meigs. Married for 66 wonderful years, Steve and Pat shared an enduring partnership filled with love, laughter, and countless adventures. Together, they explored about 40 of the 50 states—with Alaska and Arizona holding a special place in Steve’s heart—and brought back unforgettable memories, including hilarious tales of his navigation and driving through England and Scotland.

Professionally, Steve enjoyed a long and accomplished career in drafting and engineering. Known for his sharp intelligence and meticulous eye for detail, his career spanned impressive work at Southern Company Services, U.S. Pipe and Foundry, and Jim Walters Resources. Even in retirement, his skills remained in high demand as he contributed to projects with SMI Steel, Rust Engineering, and BE & K. Over the decades, Steve seamlessly adapted to the evolving craft of design, mastering everything from traditional hand drafting all the way to modern 3D CAD modeling.

Beyond his work, Steve was defined by his quick wit, precise memory, and genuine joy for living. An avid golfer, he spent countless hours on the course with friends and family. He could likely recall every single hole on every course he played. Faith was also a steady guide throughout his life. He grew up at East Lake Methodist Church and was a longtime member of Huffman Baptist Church, later finding a warm church community at Leeds First Baptist.

After spending most of his life in Birmingham, Steve and Pat moved to Leeds in 1994, and later settled in Moody in 2020, making cherished memories with family every step of the way.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Albert Meigs; his mother, Mabel Meigs; and his brother, James Meigs.

His legacy of love, humor, and devotion lives on through his wife of 66 years, Patricia Oden Meigs; his daughter, Lisa Meigs Jones, and her husband, Robert; his son, Steven Paul Meigs; his granddaughter, Bobbi Jones Benitez, and her husband, Emilio; his grandson, Andrew Paul Meigs; and his adored great-grandchildren, Lola, Dani, and Rosie Benitez. He is also survived by his sisters- and brothers-in-law, Linda Meigs, Fred Oden, Christine Sexton, Mary Weaver, John and Pat Oden, Tim and Kaye Oden, and Doris Gibson, along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Steve’s warmth, sharp mind, and unforgettable stories will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
