Richard James Hobbs

Graveside Services for Mr. Richard James Hobbs, age 94 of Birmingham, will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens with Pastor Jody Hooven officiating.

Mr. Hobbs passed away on Monday, June 24, 2024 at Grandview Medical Center. Born in Ohio, he grew up in Washington, PA, just outside of Pittsburgh, and graduated from Washington High school. After graduation, he attended Pennsylvania State University where he received a degree in Forestry. Mr. Hobbs served in the Korean War as a member of the United States Army, reaching the rank of Corporal. In the 70’s and 80’s, he was an avid runner and completed many 10k races and 3 full marathons. He worked as a Consulting Engineer for many years and retired from Jefferson County Alabama Tax Assessors Office at the age of 72.

He is survived by his daughters, Janet Meredith (Dexter) and Sandra Hobbs, his son, John Hobbs, his grandchildren, Tracy Morris, Alan Kersey, Kelley Blair, Matthew Garrison, Holli Schmitt and Kelsi Quinn, his great-grandchildren, Ethan Blair, Caleb Blair, Ashton Garrison, Jackson Morris, Oliver Morris, Tilli Schmitt, Addi Schmitt, Jordan Kersey, Eric Kersey and Hazel Kersey, a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Sally Hobbs, his infant daughter, Karen Hobbs, his son, Ricky Hobbs, his daughter, Diane Kersey, his brother, John Robert Hobbs and his parents, Richard and Dorothy Hobbs.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Our Lady of the Valley school tuition assistance fund in honor of Richard Hobbs, 551 Double Oak Lane, Birmingham, AL 35242.

The family would like to thank the Grandview Medical Center doctors and nurses for their excellent and loving care during their dad’s final weeks.
