Michael (Mike) Lonnie Darden of Pinson passed away on May 19, 2026, at the age of 75 after a hard-fought and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on April 27, 1951, in Tarrant, Alabama, to the late Waymon and Pauline (Polly) Darden, Mike was raised in a loving, close-knit home alongside his brother and sisters – relationships he treasured and nurtured throughout his life. Following his graduation from Marshall County High School in 1969, he soon began the next chapter of his life, marrying his high school sweetheart, Ann Hudgins, in 1970. It was a partnership that would define his life and legacy for the next 56 years.
In 1972, with a young family already underway, Mike began what would become a remarkable career with Norfolk Southern Railroad. What started as a job quickly grew into a calling … one he carried with pride, discipline, and unwavering dedication for 38 years. Mike embodied an “old school” work ethic that is increasingly rare: he showed up early, stayed late, and believed that doing a job “the right way” mattered more than just getting the job done. That amazing dedication and grit left a lasting mark on those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Everyone who knew Mike would agree he was larger than life … a force of nature, a loyal friend to all, and an inspiration. He had a way of making every room brighter and every gathering more fun simply by showing up. His zest for life was contagious, and his love for Alabama football was nothing short of legendary. Even the most devoted fans of those “other” teams have been known to offer up a heartfelt “Roll Tide” in honor of the one Bama fan EVERYBODY loved: Big Mike.
But more than anything, Mike was a family man. His greatest pride was not in his career or his beloved football team, but in his life with Ann and the family they built together. He was a steady provider, a guiding presence, and a constant source of strength and encouragement. Whether it was in showing up, lending a hand, or offering wisdom earned through experience, Mike made sure his family always knew they came first. Later in life, after coming to know Jesus and making Him the center of his life, Mike’s love for his family grew even deeper and more intentional. To Mike, there was no such thing as a “small” family gathering … every opportunity to get together mattered. He mastered “the art of showing up” – to every game, every graduation, every birthday, every school play. He was a living example to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of what it means to love well and put family first.
Mike Darden epitomized toughness. Over the past few years, he has faced challenge after challenge… the kind that would make anyone else feel defeated. But every time he was knocked down by a trial, he found a way to stand back up no matter the physical and emotional strain. “Ain’t no hill for a mountain climber,” he’d say. And then he would demonstrate what that meant. He fought with grit, with humor and with a stubborn optimism that made the rest of us believe we could get through anything. Even in his hardest moments, he showed us all what courage really looks like.
Mike Darden is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ann Hudgins Darden of Pinson; son Michael Darden (Barbara) of Oneonta; daughter Leigh Anne Estock (Larry) of Trussville; Grandchildren, Kolby Smyth (Gracie); Dylan Estock (Marylee); Karli Langner (Jake); Owen Darden (Grace); Riley Estock, Allyne Darden, Meredith Darden and Jaxon Estock; and great-grandkids Layla, Ronan, Samson and Maxwell. He is also survived by his siblings, Ronnie Darden (Wanda) of Altoona; Glenda Morrow of Horton; Linda Camp (Tony) of Scottsboro; Joan Phillips (Mark) of Albertville; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Darden was preceded in death by his father, Waymon Darden, his mother, (Pauline) Polly Darden and his sister Patricia Roeder.
A visitation is scheduled Saturday, May 23, at Faith Community Fellowship, 7660 Gadsden Highway at 11:00 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life service at noon. Please wear your Bama game day gear (or something crimson and/or white).
Pastor Steve McCarty and Pastor Carlos Flores will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made online to kidsofcostarica.com or checks can be made payable to Kids of Costa Rica and sent to the Faith Community Fellowship address.
God bless you, Big Mike Darden. The world is a little quieter without you. But it’s a FAR better place because you were here. We love you.
