Funeral Services for Mrs. Mary Anne Slye Thomas, age 84 of Springville, will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. at Cahaba Springs Presbyterian Church with deNay Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
Mary Anne Slye Thomas passed away on March 29, 2025. She is now reunited with her beloved husband, Robert Wayne Thomas, and her dear sister, Rebecca Slye Hay, in heaven. Born on August 24, 1940, Anne led a life full of love, dedication, and service. She was a devoted wife to Wayne and a proud mother to her two daughters, Cindy Brackenbury (David Perry) and Elaine Smith (Robert). She was also a cherished grandmother to four grandchildren—Dallas Smith (Brittany), Rachel Richards (Evan), Amanda Blakely (Quintin), and Todd Brackenbury (Sarah)—and adored her eight great-grandchildren, who brought her so much joy.
Anne had a long and fulfilling career as a Registered Nurse, proudly graduating at the top of her class and awarded as Outstanding Student of the Year from Jefferson State Community College. She spent 25 years caring for others, and her compassion touched many lives along the way. Beyond her work, she was deeply involved in her community, volunteering at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens as a Master Gardener and serving as Treasurer of the Birmingham Fern Society. Her faith was an essential part of her life. Anne and Wayne were active members of Cahaba Springs Presbyterian Church, where she found immense joy in participating in the Presbyterian Women’s Group. Her warmth and generosity of spirit will be missed by all who knew her there. Anne was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed classic mysteries. Because she loved animals, she tenderly cared for cats, dogs, cattle, goats, birds, and various other woodland creatures. Her love of travel took her on many adventures over the years. Whether in the U.S. or abroad, she embraced the world with curiosity and enthusiasm. Anne’s commitment to service extended beyond her family. She was proud of her family’s service in the military. Because the military troops and families were dear to her heart, she often provided her time and resources to help with their service projects. Her belief in supporting those who serve our country was a deep part of her identity, and she always made sure to offer encouragement and help in any way she could.
Although we will miss her deeply, we find comfort knowing Anne is now at peace, surrounded by the love of her family in heaven. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, faith, and a deep love for her family and community. We will carry her memory with us, always.
