Obituary

Martha Sue “Susie” Lewis Crain was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on September 16, 2026, at her home in Leeds, AL. She was 85 years old.

Susie was born in Birmingham, Alabama on November 20, 1940. She attended Woodlawn High School. She dedicated her life to being a loving homemaker and took great pride in her home. Susie had an eye for decorating, beautifully incorporating pieces from boutiques, yard sales, and local shops to create cozy, inviting spaces. She had an incredible green thumb and loved curating beautiful gardens. The Crain home in Leeds received the Honor Roll Beautification Award.

In her younger years, Susie enjoyed listening to music, dancing, going to the beach, shopping, playing bingo, and trips to the casino. Her twilight years found her sitting peacefully on her back porch, sharing quiet conversations, and admiring the breathtaking view. Above all, Susie loved visiting with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She collectively referred to them as her “garden” and was the proud matriarch of her family.

Susie is survived by her devoted husband of almost 70 years, James “Jim” Crain; her beloved children, Cathy Massengill (David) and James “Chip” Crain (Marcie); her loving grandchildren, Jamie Goodman (Jamey), Toby Nichols (Holly), Casey Nichols (Melissa), Alison Isaminger (Jacob), and Jake Crain (Katie); her eleven beautiful great-grandchildren: Rylee, Lacey, JP, Carter, Seth, Micah, Max, Noland, Toby, Ivy Lou, and Huck; and her siblings, Patricia Jolly, Nancy Runyan, and Jimmy Lewis.

She enters into glory to be reunited with her daughter, Christy Crain; her parents, Cecil and Myrtle Lewis; and her brother, Mike Lewis.

Chapel services will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville, AL. Pastor Rickey Bradford will be officiating. Visitation begins at 1:00 p.m. Funeral services begin at 2:00 p.m. Burial in Jefferson Memorial Gardens to follow.
