Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Martha G. McDonald, who departed this world peacefully on Friday, September 11, 2026, at her home in Pinson, AL, surrounded by her beloved family. Born on December 20, 1950, Martha was the cherished daughter of Ralph and Eunice Short of Birmingham, AL.

Martha was a woman of remarkable warmth and kindness whose infectious laughter could light up any room and whose love for her family knew no bounds. She had an extraordinary gift for making those around her feel cherished and loved, and her playful banter brought joy and laughter to all who knew her.

In 1979, Martha married Fred A. McDonald Jr., and together they built a life filled with love and happiness. They raised their son, Darrell Dean McDonald, nurturing him with the same care and devotion that characterized their own relationship. Martha's life was further enriched by her daughter-in-law Stacy, grandsons, Cameron and Dayton McDonald, her granddaughters-in-law, Judy and Christine, and her precious great-granddaughter, Olivia.

Martha's creative spirit found expression in her love for cross-stitch, crocheting, embroidery, and diamond art. She was also an exceptional cook, delighting her family and friends with meals prepared with love. These hobbies were more than pastimes; they were a testament to her patience, attention to detail, and the joy she found in creating beauty with her hands.

Chronic illness kept Martha homebound but her spirit remained vibrant. She deepened her love and faith in Christ through television worship, gospel radio, and social media services. Anytime you visited her home, you'd find the air thick with old-time gospel music-played loudly, always, as though the house itself joined her in song.

Martha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred, her parents, Ralph and Eunice Short, her sisters Emma Jean Bulloch, Nancy Ashley, and Diane Brown, and her brothers Billy Joe Short and Ralph Short. She is survived by her devoted son Darrell and his wife Stacy, her grandsons Cameron (Judy) and Dayton (Christine), her great-granddaughter Olivia, her loving sisters Patsy Hosey and Amelia Baker, and her caring nephews Patrick Prantl (Chelsea) and Heath Byess.

Martha G. McDonald will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love, laughter, and devotion will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
