Lloyd Edward Martin

September 9, 1940 — April 15, 2026

Lloyd Edward Martin, affectionately known as “Pap,” passed away on April 15, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on September 9, 1940, in Olney Springs, Colorado, to Cecil and Olive Martin, Lloyd spent most of his life in Birmingham, Alabama, and later in Trussville, Alabama, where he built a life centered on family, friendship, and the things he loved most.

Lloyd proudly served his country in the United States Navy before beginning a long and dedicated career in the newspaper industry. He worked with NCR (National Cash Register), where he traveled and serviced cash registers, before continuing his career with The Birmingham News, the Sun Sentinel in Florida, and ultimately the Royal Gazette in Bermuda. He retired from the Royal Gazette, where he spent 10 years as Vice President of Production for the island’s newspaper. He took pride in his work and the role he played behind the scenes in bringing the news to life each day.

He was known for his dry sense of humor—quick, subtle, and always well-timed. Lloyd never needed to be the loudest person in the room to make an impression. He was a humble and unpretentious man, more comfortable in the company of friends than in any spotlight, and he built lasting relationships through his steady presence and easygoing nature.

Lloyd had a deep love for golf and spent countless hours on the course. While he was a member of the prestigious Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda, he was just as proud to be part of the community at Roebuck Municipal Golf Course in Birmingham, where he earned the nickname “Mayor of Roebuck” thanks to the many friendships he formed over the years. Whether at a world-class course or a local municipal fairway, he was the same man—genuine, humble, and happiest among friends. He also enjoyed barbecuing, Alabama football, and rodeos, embracing the simple pleasures that brought people together.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Mary Jean Martin; his daughters, Jill Martin Currier and her husband, Dwayne Currier, and Ginger Martin Hollingsworth and her husband, Chris Hollingsworth; his brother, Gail Martin; and his sister, Lois.

He leaves behind a proud legacy in his grandchildren, Martin Currier and his wife, Krystin Mitchell Currier, Ethan Currier, Hilary Meares Crozier and her husband, Jake Crozier, and Allison Meares; and his great-grandchildren, Mitchell Currier, Evelynn Currier, James Currier, and Perry Crozier.

Lloyd will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend—someone who valued time with family, a good round of golf, and a life well lived.

A visitation will be held Monday at 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
