Joseph went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, November 2, 2026. Born on a farm in Shelby, Alabama, Joseph was one of fourteen children. As a child growing up during WW II, hard work and sacrifice was a way of life, yet fellowship and fun was plentiful, even during the hardest of times. The family farmland was flooded to help create Lay dam, so the family turned from farming to running a fish camp. Joe White's fish camp on Lay Lake was established by and named after Joseph's father. Joseph graduated from Shelby County High School, where he lettered in basketball while managing to run a class-B dairy before and after school. He walked two miles to catch the school bus each day and two miles home. The family faithfully walked several miles to Bay Springs Baptist Church for every service, where Joseph came to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of fourteen. Upon graduation from high school, he worked for a short time with Shelby County Highway Department. Joseph was later employed by Alabama Power Company, where he worked for thirty-nine years and retired as Underground Foreman. During this time he was also in the Alabama National Guard for eighteen years. After retiring, he was active with the Birmingham Division Energizers retiree chapter and served on their board for several years.
Joseph enjoyed singing, sang briefly in a gospel quartet and led singing at different churches he attended. He was the community "fix-it" man and volunteered many hours to help neighbors and friends with different projects and other community service. He also enjoyed his garden and giving away the produce. He loved his Quarter Horses, cows, goats and chickens. Most importantly, Joe loved working for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and spent many hours visiting for and working at his church. An avid sportsman, Joseph enjoyed hunting and was quite a marksman. He also enjoyed fishing and was a successful fisherman. Joe was a member of American Quarter Horse Association; National Rifle Association; Alabama Horse Council; Native Americans. He was supportive of several charitable organizations; Alabama Sheriffs Ranch; Downtown Jimmie Hale Mission; Salvation Army; Samaritans Purse; Alabama Wildlife Center; Christian Appalachian Project; and the Cochranes, missionaries to Mali.
Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Joe Thomas White and Louisa Etress White; sisters Velma, Christine, Sarah, Lura, Lillious and Mary Lou; brothers Marion, Charles, James, Reed and Frank White.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette Dover White, formerly from Birmingham; son, J. Thomas “Tommy” White (Kelly); stepson R. David Martin, Jr. (Ruth) of Remlap, AL, granddaughter Chelsea Smith; step-grandson Chad David Martin; numerous grandchildren, niece, nephews and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution to a listed charity would be appreciated.
