Johnnie Deuel

October 18, 1942 — February 28, 2025

Johnnie Lee Hurst Deuel (82) passed away on February 28, 2025 from complications following a blood clot. Born (10/18/1942 ) and raised in Talladega, AL, Johnnie married her high school sweetheart, Byron Judson Deuel. They then moved to Birmingham, where they raised three children: Bonnie Joyce Deuel (Stan) Bradley, Bruce John Deuel and Bradley Joe Deuel.

Known for loving her family, gardening, watching the Crimson Tide play football, crocheting, and feeding birds, Johnnie will be missed by many. Johnnie worked for many years as an Environmental Services Supervisor at BMC Montclair, then at UAB. Emulating her own grandmother’s example, she enjoyed teaching kids’ Sunday School classes at Shades Mountain Independent Church and McCalla Bible Church.

Johnnie was preceded in death by her parents, J.W. and Louise Hurst, her husband, Byron Deuel, her brother, Bill Hurst and her daughter, Bonnie Bradley.

She is survived by her sons, Bruce and Brad (Jan) Deuel; six grandchildren, Lydia (Noah) Probst, Bethany (Clay) Giles, Stephen Deuel, Phillip Deuel, Elliot Deuel and Elijah Deuel and one great-grandson, Everett Probst.

Johnnie also leaves behind a sister, Anita Dillard, a sister-in-law, Kim Hurst, nephews, D.J. Dillard and Patrick Hurst, and nieces, Megan Merritt and Sun-na Hurst.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on March 8, 2025 at the Jefferson Memorial Cemetery (1591 Gadsden Highway) in Trussville, AL, and following that there will be a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. at McCalla Bible Church, 5860 Old Tuscaloosa Highway, McCalla AL 35111.

Johnnie’s family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the missionary fund at McCalla Bible Church. Checks should be made out to McCalla Bible Church and sent to McCalla Bible Church, ℅ Mr. Brad Deuel, 2566 Foothills Drive, Hoover, AL 35226. Thank you!
