Obituary

John Robert Alexander “Bob” Whitlock III

John Robert Alexander “Bob” Whitlock III, 92, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2026, in Alabaster, Alabama, in the loving company of his wife, Barbara, while enjoying one of his favorite pastimes—watching SEC football. After 92½ years of a life well lived, his heart finally came to rest.

Born on March 15, 1934 in Powell, Wyoming, Bob was a proud son of Wyoming, a place that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He attended Greybull High School, where he played football, graduating with the Class of 1952. He went on to graduate from the University of Wyoming with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, beginning a distinguished professional career that would take him and his family across the country.

Bob devoted over 30 years to General Electric, working as an electrical engineer specializing in quality assurance. His career took him to several locations, including Owego, New York; Fort Walton Beach, Florida; and Huntsville, Alabama. Although work carried him far from his beginnings, he never lost his deep affection for his Wyoming roots. Huntsville eventually became his home for the final 40 years of his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara; his children, Elizabeth Mostue (Chet), Laurie Donis (Kerri), John Robert Whitlock IV (Connie), Jennifer Whitlock, Ira Jay Whitlock (Nici), Nelson Papucci and Betsy Olliff. His legacy also lives on through 17 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson, spanning five generations of a family whose lives were shaped by his presence. He was preceded in death by his parents John Robert Jr. and Doris Eileene Whitlock and his brother James Delorme Whitlock.

During the final three years of his life, while Bob resided in memory care, Barbara remained his constant companion and devoted caregiver. She continued to bring comfort, companionship, and dignity to his days, remaining faithfully by his side until his final moments.

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Bob found pleasure in the simple things that made life meaningful. He enjoyed a good round of golf, the excitement and traditions of college football, and his involvement in causes that reflected his deeply held pro-life convictions.

His favorite movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, offered a message that seems especially fitting now: the true measure of a life is not found in wealth, accomplishments, or even longevity, but in the lives we touch along the way. Like the film’s beloved George Bailey, Bob’s legacy is found not simply in what he accomplished, but in the family he raised, the relationships he nurtured, and the difference he made in the lives of others.

From the wide-open spaces of Wyoming to the rolling hills of Alabama, Bob’s journey was a long and remarkable one. Though his journey has ended, his legacy lives on in the generations that follow him and in the memories of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by Barbara and the family he leaves behind.
