John Thomas Mueller, 80, of Jasper, Alabama, passed away peacefully today, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, brilliance, and quiet strength.
Born in Mississippi in 1945, J.T. was a lifelong learner and achiever. He graduated as valedictorian of his class at Bay Springs High School before attending Mississippi State and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he earned dual bachelor's degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, as well as a Master of Business Administration. He held numerous professional certifications and licenses, including the esteemed Professional Engineer (PE) credential. A proud member of Mensa, he consistently encouraged intellectual curiosity, excellence, and precision in all aspects of life.
J.T. devoted over two decades of his career to the University of Alabama Hospital (UAB), where he served as the Director of Biomedical Engineering. Throughout his career, his expertise also extended to various roles at the City of Jasper, DCH in Tuscaloosa, and University Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Known for his methodical mind and astute leadership, J.T.'s work ensured countless patients received safe, innovative care through advanced medical technologies.
Upon retirement, J.T. turned his focus to the art of fine craftsmanship, finding new joy and creativity in jewelry making. His intricate pieces reflected the same attention to detail and thoughtful design that defined his engineering career.
J.T. delved into geneology and traveled with his wife, Jan, to various family reunion events, and he proudly served as Treasurer for the National Association for Leavitt Families for several years.
More than his accolades, J.T. will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was proceeded in death by his father, Henry Francis Mueller, his mother, Virginia Mae Leavitt Mueller, and his brother, Henry Joseph Mueller.
J.T. is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Janice Allred Mueller; daughter Christy Mueller Smith and her husband David; son John Thomas Mueller, Jr. and his wife Amber; and granddaughter Miller Smith, who brought endless pride and light to his later years.
J.T.'s life was a testament to quiet excellence, humility, and lifelong passion for learning. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and honored always.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to a scholarship fund or charity of your choice in J.T.'s memory.
