Obituary

John Michael "Mike" Smith passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on July 5, 2026.

Mike was known for his larger-than-life personality, infectious sense of humor, and genuine love for people.

He was born on December 9, 1950, in Decatur, Alabama, to Bill and Elizabeth Smith. As the youngest of four boys, he spent much of his childhood outdoors, making memories with his brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Elizabeth ("Liz") Smith, and his brothers, Billy Joe Smith and David Smith. Mike graduated from Decatur High School in 1969 and earned his bachelor's degree in Business from the University of Alabama in 1973.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Sue Smith; his daughter, Amy Smith Gardner and her husband, Jason; his son, Scott Smith; and his cherished granddaughter, Helen Gardner. He is also survived by his older brother, Daryl Smith and his wife, Betsy, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Mike was the ultimate salesman and truly had the gift of gab. As the owner of Mike's Fabrics Wholesale and Retail, he traveled throughout the Southeast providing fabrics, upholstery, and ribbon to his loyal customers. He was deeply loved by those he served because of his caring nature, warm personality, and remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

Mike enjoyed golfing with his regular golf group and bowling with friends each week. He loved the Lord and was an active member of his Sunday School class and small group at church. Known as the life of the party, he brought joy and laughter wherever he went.

He loved spending time at the beach, grilling outdoors, and traveling, and he was rarely seen without his Alabama hat. Whether he was traveling in Europe, exploring the American West, or simply out running errands, that familiar hat often sparked conversations that turned strangers into friends. He was an avid reader of Tom Clancy novels and loved to answer the phone by saying, "Hello, Tom Cruise speaking," always getting a laugh from those who knew him. Music and dancing brought him great joy, and he was an exceptional trivia player with an impressive wealth of knowledge that he loved sharing with others.

Perhaps his favorite role was being Granddaddy to his granddaughter, Helen, who especially loved his famous back tickles. Above all, Mike will be remembered for making people feel welcome, valued, and loved. He will be deeply missed as a devoted husband, loving father, proud Granddaddy, loyal brother, and faithful friend.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Brookwood Baptist Church.
