Jo Ann Armstrong

August 22, 1934 — December 9, 2023

On December 9, 2023, Jo Ann White Armstrong was reunited with her husband of sixty one years, Coach John Lee Armstrong. She was preceded in death by her Father, William Rufus White, and Mother, Eunice Ruth Boggs White. JoAnn leaves behind her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who  were the centerpieces of her very devout Christian life. She is survived by her son, John Lee Armstrong, Jr. James William Armstrong and his wife, Lisa, their children William Murray  Armstrong married to Kenna, Jami Lynn Kellum, and her husband Michael, MaryJoAnn and Thomas Dunne, along with their youngest daughter, Sara Nicole Milam,  and her husband Robb. Jo Ann’s precious daughter, Joy Ruth, is married to Steven Edward Barber, and they have three children: Jessica Ann Barber, Steven Edward Barber Jr, his wife, Renee, and Lauren Lou Barber. Jo Ann and John Lee’s youngest child is Jeffery Vernon Armstrong, Sr. He is the proud father of his daughter, Joy Renee Armstrong, and his son, Jeffery Vernon Armstrong, Jr. Jo Ann’s eleven grandchildren are Ella Michelle Armstrong, Sarah McCay Armstrong, James Walton Armstrong, Amelia Grace Armstrong, Nash Craddock Andrew Armstrong, Connor Michael Kelllum, Parker Afton Kellum, Lillian Barber, Steven Barber III, Sara Jo Ann Milam, and Daxton Robert Milam and eleven great grandchildren.

At the age of thirty four, Jo Ann completed her Bachelor’s Degree at Samford University in Education. She taught Psychology and Sociology at EB Erwin High School in Center Point, Alabama from the time she was thirty four until her retirement at sixty four.

Anyone who knew Jo Ann was aware of her passion for dogs and knitting. This was only outweighed by her even greater passion for Hebrew history and culture, and her travels to the Holy Land. She visited Jordan and Egypt in the early, 2000s, and visited Israel sixtimes between 1996 and 2018. She was a voracious reader, and enjoyed trying to beat her personal bests in playing electronic Solitaire.

Jo Ann and Coach were both renowned throughout their lifetimes for the dedicated New Testament Christian examples they set for the countless young people who came under their influence and for whom they provided guidance over the sixty one years they worked, taught, and were constantly active in their church. They were both Charter Members of Carson Road Baptist church which they attended, faithfully, for over thirty years. After Coach passed away, Jo Ann was an active member of Chalkville, First Baptist Church.

In Lieu of flowers, JoAnn’s family gratefully requests that donations be made to the John Lee Armstrong Scholarship Foundation at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.
