James Milton “Doc” Phillips, 88, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, surrounded by his family.
James was born on November 17, 1937, in Bessemer, Alabama, to Hassel Olen Phillips and Mary Ellen Rash Phillips.
James’s faith and his devotion to God, grounded in the teachings of Jesus, permeated every aspect of his life and could be seen clearly through his actions, character, and service to others. He served faithfully as an elder at Homewood Church of Christ for many years, offering steady leadership, wisdom, and a quiet example of Christian love.
He was the beloved husband of Rosalie Karen Phillips and a devoted father to his children, Christopher Phillips, Bryan Phillips, and Tasha Phillips. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Carson, James, Megan, and Ryan, who affectionately knew him as “Doc,” a name that reflected both his profession and the warmth he carried into family life.
James was a graduate of the University of Alabama, and his lifelong love of Alabama football remained a constant joy. He attended Officer Candidate School in the United States Navy, serving as a Lieutenant Junior Grade during his four years of active duty. He went on to achieve the rank of Lieutenant during his time in the Navy Reserve, fulfilling his military service with honor and dedication.
Following his time in the Navy, James earned his medical degree in orthodontics and practiced as an orthodontist in Birmingham, Alabama, where he cared for countless patients and became a trusted presence in the community.
Outside of his professional life, James found deep happiness at Lake Mitchell, where he loved spending time on the water, especially driving his pontoon boat. He also had a lifelong love of music and singing, participating in multiple barbershop choirs over the years and frequently leading singing at church—using his voice as another form of service and praise.
Please join us in celebrating Jame’s life this Sunday, January 4, 2026, at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home in Trussville, Alabama. Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., with a service to follow at 2:00 pm.
