Irene "Nanny"
Toole
May 22, 1939 — Sep 15, 2026
Bertha Irene Toole, lovingly known as Nanny, was born on May 22, 1939, in Talladega, Alabama. She passed away surrounded by the love of family and friends on September 15, 2026, at 8:38 AM. Her life was a beautiful example of faith, kindness, and devotion, and her legacy will continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.
Irene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Patrick Toole; her parents, Frank and Ethel Gortney; and her siblings, Willie Gortney, Myrtle Mashburn, Henry Gortney, Albert Gortney, and Norman Gortney. She is survived by her sister, Gladys Morton; her brother, Bobby Gortney; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Irene was a devoted mother to her three children: Doug (Kris) Griffin, Deniase (Don) Farmer, and Midge (Tink) Atkinson. She was a cherished Nanny to her six grandchildren: Brandon Griffin, Heath Farmer, Derrick Griffin, Melicia Rogers, Mandi Gilliland, and Craig Atkinson. Her family grew to include nineteen great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her great pride and joy.
Irene found great joy in life's simple blessings. She loved spending time at home, especially relaxing on her porch swing, where she often reflected on God's goodness and welcomed family and friends with warmth and hospitality. More than anything, she treasured time spent with her family, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.
Known for her gentle spirit and unwavering faith, Nanny lived as the hands and feet of Jesus. She expressed her love not only in words but also through faithful acts of service, encouragement for those in need, and a life that reflected Christ's compassion and grace. She touched countless lives, and her example will remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Though her presence will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in knowing that her faith has become sight and that she is now at peace in the presence of her Lord and Savior.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Jefferson Memorial in Trussville, Alabama.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 18, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Jefferson Memorial. A procession to Red Hill Baptist Church for burial will follow.
The family asks that Irene, lovingly known as Nanny, be remembered not simply for the number of years she lived, but for the enduring love, faith, and kindness she shared so freely with others.

May her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her.
