Herbert Joseph Metcalf Jr

Herbert Joseph Metcalf, Jr., 79 years old, of Trussville, Alabama, passed away on December 10, 2025, after a long 9-year battle with cancer. He battled cancer with the most amazing grace, bravery and strength. He lived every day with positivity and determination not to let the disease keep him from being there for his family and doing the things he loved. He passed away holding the hand of his beloved wife, Tammy, and with his children lovingly by his side.

Herb was born on July 20, 1946, to Herbert & Bernice Metcalf of Dothan, Alabama. After Herb graduated from Dothan High School in 1965, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served in the U. S. Army Security Agency, serving 2 years behind the Iron Curtain in Berlin, Germany. Upon his honorable discharge in 1970, he went on to study Accounting at Auburn University.

After graduating with a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1974, he started his first job in public accounting, where he then achieved his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in 1979. However, Herb soon realized his desire was to be in private practice and opened his own firm in 1980, where he continued to serve his clients with integrity and great passion over the past 45 years. He truly felt great joy in seeing his clients succeed!

Herb was truly dedicated to "the love of his life", Tammy, and their children and grandchildren. He often spoke of one of his greatest life accomplishments, being the day, he married Tammy in 1991 and started their lifelong journey of love and happiness that resulted in over 34 years of marriage. Herb was a completely selfless person, who always put his family first, always, and was a dedicated father, grandfather, and husband. He was a strong, kind, loving, and supportive father and his knowledge and guidance were the foundation of his family. Though our hearts hold deep sadness at the loss of our beloved husband, father, and brother, it also holds the blessings of the life we shared and the love that will always be a part of us.

Herb leaves behind his wife, Tammy Metcalf; son, Christopher Brian Hunsinger; daughter, Meghan Metcalf Deerman; grandchildren, Emily Elizabeth Metcalf, Freya Amy Deerman, and soon to be Aria Elizabeth Deerman, due in April 2026; along with his two sisters, Becky Schaeffer and Diane Scholz, and many nieces and nephews. Herb was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Bernice Metcalf; his two daughters, Courtney Michelle Metcalf and Amy Diane Hunsinger - an unimaginable loss that carries with it a grief that last a lifetime. Herb was the anchor that held our family together through the many years of suffering and sorrow, as we clawed our way from the depth of this unimaginable pain. His love and patience provided us with the path to love deeper and to embrace happiness and joy again.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, 1591 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35235, followed by a private graveside gathering for immediate family members.
