Gerald D. Ash

Mr. Gerald D. Ash passed away at his home in Irondale on September 28, 2026. He was 83.

“Mr. Jerry” was a lifelong resident of Birmingham. He dedicated his life to serving his community as a firefighter at both Birmingham and Irondale fire departments for 45 years, and carried this loyalty and brotherhood throughout the remainder of his life. He was an exemplar of Christian faith, serving God and people at The Church at Grants Mill, formerly known as First Baptist Irondale, where he was a vital member. He proudly served his country in the Armed Forces with the 82nd Airborne.

When he took his last breath, he opened his eyes to hear “well done, my good and faithful servant.” His family and friends rest in the knowledge of that. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Merry Ash; son, Michael (Angela) Ash of Alpine, AL; grandson, Lee Ferrell of Anniston, AL; granddaughter, Mary (Dylan) Longino of Canton, GA; four great-grandchildren: Rylee and Lawson Ferrell, and Everett and Grant Longino, who affectionately called him “Big Pop,” along with a host of extended family and friends who he loved as much as family.

Jerry never met a stranger or anyone he was not willing to help. He had a brilliant mind, a wealth of knowledge, and a remarkable ability to fix just about anything. More than his handy skills, it was his generous spirit that truly defined him; he gave freely of his time and talents, leaving a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

He rejoiced in the Heavenly promise of being reunited with his parents, Frank Earl Ash and Hilda Katherine Ash; his brother, Lee Wayne Ash; and his sister-in-law, Esther Ash.

Services will be held at a later date to be determined. The family will share service details as soon as they are finalized, and they will be shared on the Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home website.
