Elizabeth Harmon was born in Birmingham, AL in 1928. She experienced the great depression and grew up in many places in the United States as her Dad worked construction jobs. Many of her childhood memories were on the farm of her grandfather, Joel Newton , in South Carolina. She told stories of his love for Jesus and how he showed her how to work on a farm and the importance of Christ in her life. She became a Christian at the age of 7 and continued to grow in her love of Christ. She had a passion for missions and served as Missionary President for various churches in the Nazarene Denomination and participated on Mission trips to other countries.
She graduated from High School at the age of 15. She had a love for learning that was insatiable. She attended college and furthered her education by taking various courses in accounting.
In 1947, at the age of 18, she married Jasper Val Harmon, Jr. He had just returned home from WWII. Their meeting was by God’s hand filled with instance love. He later served as a lay pastor in the Church of the Nazarene and she supported him in planting the Grand Bay Church of the Nazarene and various activities as a pastor’s wife. They were married for 35 years before his passing.
She retired from Huntington Ingalls Industry where she was a cost accountant and auditor. She enjoyed her career and loved the people whom she worked with, always noting them as dear friends. There she was awarded recognition by United Way for her devotion to raising money for many causes.
Many years after the passing of her husband, she remarried to Wilbert King with whom she spent her retirement years traveling and enjoying family and life for 20 years before his passing.
She left a legacy of love for Christ, family, and friends. Her son in law, Merrol, would often speak of how she treated him as a son and he was sure that she had a hotline to heaven. Those who knew her loved her generous ways and gift of caring for others.
She was preceded in death by : Husbands, Jasper Val Harmon, Jr., Wilbert King. stepdaughters, Linda Harmon Rasband, and Patricia King Holifield; brothers, Joseph Newton, Russel Newton; sisters: Dorothy Newton Weins, Rita Newton Harmon; grandson, Mark Wade Hyde, Gary Batson; granddaughter, Shelley Warner-Norton.
Elizabeth is survived by her children, Daughter Beverly Harmon Hyde ( Merrol); son, Timohy Val Harmon (JoAnn); grandchildren, Michael Scott Hyde (Amber) Jennifer Harmon Johnson. Britany Harmon Hargis (Mark). Timothy Val Harmon, Jr. Tiffany Rasband Adcock (Mark); great-grandchildren, Jocelyn Hyde, Jacob Hyde, Caleb Hyde, Bailey Hyde, Matt Johnson, AJ Johnson, Emma Johnson, Dmitri Harmon, Michael Harmon, Jayde Rasband, Emma Adcock, Madison Whitehead Jessica Batson Siders; sisters, Elva Newton Schindler. Ruth Newton Bradshaw.
Pallbearers will be Merrol Hyde, Scott Hyde, Jacob Hyde, Tim Harmon, Jr., Mark Hargis.
