Durrell Earl
Tyler
Dec 10, 1929 — Sep 10, 2026
Durell Earl Tyler, 96, of Fultondale, died at his home on September 10, 2026, surrounded by family. He leaves behind a family who will deeply miss his presence, stories, and music, which was a constant part of his life.
He was born to Charles and Martha Massey Tyler in Oxford, Mississippi, on December 10, 1929. He served in the United States Army for 20 years with deployments during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, and retired as a Staff Sargent. After his military retirement, he began a 19-year career with the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier in Center Point, Alabama.
He loved bluegrass, country, and gospel music, and enjoyed watching western movies. He played music by ear— mandolin, fiddle, banjo, guitar—and delighted in joining other players. Those who knew him will remember his gift for telling stories with vivid details that made you feel as though you were there. He was an avid Ole Miss football fan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 30 years, JoAnn Carr Tyler, 1 brother, and 3 sisters.
He is survived by his present wife of 36 years, Martha Gann Tyler, Fultondale; brother Pat Tyler, Mississippi; daughters Debra Tyler Dominic (David), Gardendale; Frances Tyler Nelms (Jim), Highland Lake; Kimberly Tyler Reno, Gulf Shores; his grandchildren, Jeremy Dominic; Emily Nelms Chastain (Ted); Josh Nelms (Fredia); Amber Reno; Jennifer Dominic Brown (Chris); Brandi Reno McAnear (James); Joanna Dominic Calvert (Corey), and Blake Reno; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The Tyler family is deeply grateful for your support, prayers, and kindness during this time. The family extends special thanks to Durell’s caregivers—Pat, Connie, Lisa, Shonda, Robbie, and Valari—for loving him like family.
