Bernis (Butch) Clayton Howard, also known as Grandaddy, was born in Birmingham, AL on January 23, 1946. He left for heaven on November 23, 2024.
Butch’s life was one big adventure. He served his country proudly in the Marine Corps. After basic training, he came home to marry the love of his life, Mary Ann. Together, they loved to support their sons, Bobby and Tommy, in everything they did.
Not one to turn down a challenge, Butch got a doctorate from the University of Alabama while working two jobs, then went on to teach at Jefferson State Community College, where he retired in 1996. He cared deeply for his students and went out of his way to lift them in mind, body, and spirit. He was proud to be part of the Trussville City Schools Board of Education, serving as president from 2006-2007.
Butch was always up for something new. He became a flight instructor in his spare time and passed on his passion for flying to his sons. He was persistent and determined, which carried over into his love for running. He managed to complete three marathons in one year.
His deep love for God was a remarkable thing to witness. Through all of life’s curveballs, Butch was full of faith, trusting God to take care of every situation. He lived by the Biblical principle, ‘To whom much is given, much will be required’ (Luke 12:48)- no matter how much or little you had. He would do just about anything for anyone. He had a passion for fixing anything broken, from cars to homes, but mostly people. He was happiest surrounded by family (and good food was a plus). He was a great encourager and cheerleader for his sons and grandchildren in everything they did. He never met a stranger and always kept his family laughing.
Butch (“Grandaddy”) is survived by his adoring wife, Mary Ann (aka Nan); his two sons, Bobby (Stephanie) and Tommy (Sherlyn); along with nine grandchildren- Lauren (Chase), Andrew, Lane (Ellen), Michael (Caroline), Julianna (Carden), Joseph, Grant (Carlee), Grey (Alyia) and Adam- and 11 great-grandchildren (and counting). He will be greatly missed.
A visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, followed by a 12:00 p.m. service officiated by Pastor Chase Depew at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff and management at Kirkwood by the River and Compassus Hospice for their care and compassion towards our Grandaddy.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Howard, Lane Howard, Michael Howard, Joseph Howard, Grant Howard, Grey Howard, Adam Howard and Carden McKay.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Butch’s memory to Kirkwood by the River’s Patio Fund (3605 Ratliff Rd, Birmingham, AL 35210).
