It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Barry Gresham Brooks, who left this world on August 24, 2026, after a courageous struggle with ALS. Born on November 8, 1952, in Carthage, Mississippi, Barry was devoted to family, idealistic in his beliefs, and was willing to devote the hard work required to achieve his vision, both professionally and personally.

Barry was the beloved son of Dr. Gladden M. Brooks and Carolyn Gresham Brooks, who predeceased him along with his sister Lisa Carol Brooks Ashmore and his nephew Eric Ashmore. He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years Teresa Brooks and their cherished daughter Haley Brooks. His family circle includes his brother Randy (Ginny) Brooks and their children Meredith Brooks and Dana (Leah) Brooks; nephew Zachry Ashmore; brother-in-law Harry (Tracey) Rucks and their children Angie (Bryan) Simon, Mandy (Ace) Duncan, Ally (Andy) Bishop, and Layne Rucks; and sister-in-law Robin Chambers and her children Hannah (Andy) Estes, Ellen (Matt) Lathrop, and Claudia (David) Flynn, and several dear cousins and their spouses.

Barry was reared in Starkville, MS, and graduated from Starkville High School in 1971. His educational journey began after developing an interest in communications and working as a disc jockey while continuing his studies at Mississippi State University, sowing the seeds for a successful career in communications. It was while working at the Mississippi Extension Service in communications where Barry met Teresa, his future bride, and together they embarked on a lifelong journey of love and companionship.

Barry's entrepreneurial spirit led him to Birmingham, where he launched Brooks Audio Production, a testament to his innovative mind and passion for creating meaningful connections through sound. He enjoyed his decades-long career as a producer, engineer, and recordist for film, television, and radio. His work garnered many awards, including four Emmys. For his creativity, talent, expertise, and joy for the work, Barry was highly sought after by a wide range of clients, whom he continued to serve long after many would have retired. The names Barry Brooks and Brooks Audio will continue to roll in the credits for years to come.

From a young age, Barry was deeply involved in the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. This accomplishment reflected his commitment to leadership and community service, values he carried throughout his life. In standing up for what is right, in maintaining his integrity, and in facing the ravages of the cruel disease that was taking his abilities one by one, Barry lived by the motto, “A Scout is brave.”

Barry was a man of many interests, though his family and friends were at the heart of everything he did. His personal qualities of warmth, generosity, and an unwavering sense of humor made him a cherished friend and confidant to many.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that contributions be made to ALS research efforts such as The ALS Association to continue Barry's legacy of giving and kindness.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at UAB Hospital, the ALS clinic, and the Palliative Care Unit for their exceptional care and support during Barry's final days.

A graveside service will be held on September 25, 2026, 12:00 p.m., at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville.
