Barbara McCullar Grubbs

June 25, 1934 — September 22, 2023

Barbara (Bobbye) McCullar Grubbs was born on June 25, 1934, and entered her eternal home on September 22, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband, George T. Grubbs, her great-grandson Gabriel Travis Taylor, and her mother Mary Susan McCullar. She leaves behind her son Joel T. Grubbs (Carol) and her daughter Stacy Burns (Britt), grandchildren Brandon (Marisa), Brentley (Lindsey), Bryan (Tonya) and Christina, as well as great grandchildren Allie, Anna, Abby, McCulley, Wells, and Collins. She is also survived by her brother Ken, sister Ellen, and many other relatives.

Bobbye was raised in Walker County, Alabama, where she spent her days playing in the field with her cousins and eating the fruits of the fields prepared by her mother and grandmother. Later she and her family moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where she graduated from Andrew Jackson High School and Comptometer school. She met a handsome navy man, George Grubbs, and they soon married.

Married life brought George and Bobbye back to Alabama where they settled in the eastern side of Birmingham and started a family. Bobbye enjoyed her role as a mother and homemaker, creating a lovely, warm, welcoming environment for her family to enjoy. She delighted in making delicious meals and wonderful desserts for her family and friends. Bobbye also enjoyed entertaining on holidays, hosting friends for cards or bunco games, neighborhood friends for coffee and pound cake, and elaborate spend the night birthday parties for her children.

A skilled seamstress, she enjoyed making clothes, bedspreads, curtains, and stuffed animals.

Bobby’s heart was with Jesus from a young age and church was a refuge. Her family were active members of Eastside Baptist Church and later South Roebuck Baptist Church and First Baptist Springville. She taught Sunday School, volunteered at VBS, GAs, and sang in the choir. Never to miss a church supper, she was eager to offer her fried chicken, creamed corn, and popular strawberry cream pie. Bobbye participated in mission work by hosting weekend visits with young foster children, chaperoning student events, making meals for Hope’s Lodge, or a host of WMU events and projects.

Bobbye was always a room mom, always a team mom for baseball, a health room assistant and a chauffeur for her children and their friends. She loved being a chaperone on the yearly Triad beach trips. Children and teens loved her and countless friends enjoyed long, deep, informational conversations, both in person and over the phone. In later life as a grandmother, she repeated the same involvement in activities at school, church, dance, and especially the ballpark with her cherished grandchildren and later her great grandchildren. Bobbye’s children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her most treasured gifts in life, and she adored them as they did her.

After the passing of her precious husband of 57 years, she became a card playing enthusiast and spent many days a week at Springville Retirement Center laughing and joking with dear friends. Bobbye Grubbs will always be cherished in the hearts of her family as Mom, Momma, and NeeNaw.

Arrangements for Bobbye Grubbs will be on September 28, 2023, at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville, Alabama, with visitation at 10:00am and celebration of life service at 12:00pm.
