Augustus Hogue

April 9, 1925 — August 9, 2025

 Augustus Cleveland Hogue, Jr., born April 9, 1925, in Birmingham, AL. Gus (Papa Gus) is predeceased by his parents, Augustus Cleveland Hogue, Sr. and Clara Louise Breneman Hogue; his brother, William Alfred (Buddy) Hogue; mother to his children, Evelyn Ida Mason Hogue; and wife, Lucile Bishop Mayfield Hogue. He is survived by children, William Richard (Bill) Hogue (Frances); Gayle Hogue Goetcheus (Tim, deceased); Judy Hogue Abbott (Rick) and Gerald Alan Hogue (Natalie); stepchildren Charlotte Mayfield Christopher; Don Hoyt Mayfield (Phyllis) and Peggy Mayfield Wall (Billy); 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Gus was a lifelong active member of Huffman United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He attended Inglenook Grammar School and Phillips High School. Gus joined the United States Navy in 1943 and trained at the U.S. Naval Training Station in San Diego, CA and was Honor Man of Company 43-131. He was a mechanic on planes at Seattle Naval Air Station and was discharged in 1946 from Bremerton, WA, then moved back to Birmingham where he worked for the Post Office in Tarrant City and Homewood. While at the Post Office Gus joined Birmingham Naval Air as a mechanic in 1948 and then joined the Air National Guard until 1961. In 1959 he became a business owner for Pure Oil Company in Mountain Brook for 28 years. After closing his station, he worked part time at Kemp’s Wrecker Service for 16 years. After being diagnosed with macular degeneration in 2003, he retired. Special mention to the City Salesmen’s Club (some of whom are pallbearers) and Clayton Dorough who brought him to the meetings; Carolyn Seever, his VA nurse; staff at Amedisys; and Christy and Leigh Ann with Lakeside Hospice. His friend and Associate Pastor of Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Tommy DeRamus, will officiate his service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Lakeside Hospice in Pell City, AL or the AMD Foundation.
